The other Sunday I was talking about Family Fun on a Budget and I was talking about things that we do as a family on the cheap to make everyday a fun day. It got me thinking though because even when we go out as a family I still try and make it as cheap as possible and today I thought I would share some of my secrets with you.
Most of our days out involve us going somewhere in our car. I love our car, we have a Citroen Xsara Picasso and I have to say that I think it is fab as a family car (although my next car will without a doubt be a Toyota Prius) because of the great storage it offers. When we go on a long journey we always check the tyre pressure, the water and oil levels and make sure that we have petrol. We empty the car of anything that we won't need and normally give it a quick wash and use the Dyson on the inside. As I am sure you know these simple steps help improve the fuel efficiency and also means that the mouldy pears are taken care of!
The great storage in our car means that we have space (in the floor) to store snacks and drinks for the journeys we make. I put family and car friendly snacks such as cartoons of juice and crisps and raisins (and the odd biscuit) into the car before we set off, so that if we need to snack whilst we are on the move we don't need to stop at the services that we past. I also keep mints in the front of the car for Daddy and I
If we are going out for the entire day, I make sure that we take snacks, drinks and if possible Lunch and a light Supper. I am always shocked, although I don't know why, at the price of drinks and snacks at theme parks or anywhere that isn't my local shop. I have a large cool bag, which will hold enough sandwiches, fruit, yogurts (I freeze tube yogurts and use them as cool packs) drinks, biscuits, crisps and cakes for the four of us more than twice over. The pack can stay in the car if we are at an attraction that lets us return to our car during the day, and if not it can either go on/in the buggy or we adults take turns in carrying it.
I love the Internet (as you probably already know) and as such will search for vouchers for days out, two for one, half price days or anything else that will save me on admission price. You can also use your Tesco Clubcard points to convert to tickets for certain theme parks and days out, so this is like free days out! I am signed up with local tourist boards to get emails about upcoming attractions so that if there is a discount for booking early I can take advantage of this. I couldn't even make a guess at how much this has saved me in the past, but I am sure that it is worth the time and effort.
Daddy always scopes out parking for where we are going, and checks that it isn't cheaper to park in a local NCP car park rather than the car park at the event we are going to. His favourite was when we went to the O2, parking at a local NCP car park cost £10 and then there was a further £5 fee for our trip on the Docklands Light Railway to the O2 arena but parking at the O2 would of cost £20. I know its only a saving of £5 but that £5 brought us our programme for the evening and meant that we spent some more time together having an adventure!
So these are my top tips, but what are your top tips? Where else can I save money?

Baby Boy and Daddy Giggles - Pick it, lick it, roll it, flick it
After coming back from the Magical Menagerie on Wednesday night we were all in high spirits and were all having a giggle. I had turned around in my seat in order to see what Baby Boy was doing, and he was sat in car seat with his finger up his nose; And when I say finger, I mean his whole finger.
"What you doing Baby? Digging for Gold?" I asked
"Gold!" shouted Baby Boy, finger still firmly shoved in his nostril
"Take your finger out" I giggled at him
A second later and Baby Boy withdrew his finger with a flourish
"Look Mum a Bee*!" He gleefully exclaimed waving around a finger with nothing on it
"Eugh!" I answered "What you going to do with it?" I continued whilst starting to search for a tissue
Baby Boy looked at his finger and looked at me. His mouth started to open.
"Your not going to eat it are you Baby Boy?" Daddy asked
"Yup!" answered Baby Boy about to stick his finger in his mouth
"Noses are not for storing food!" exclaimed Daddy
"Noses not for food. NOSES NOT FOR FOOD DADDAD!" screeched Baby Boy
Top Ender and I at this point had collapsed into giggles, but it is a very worthwhile point. Noses are not for storing food.
*Bee's are what inhabit Baby Boys nose and ears not bogeys or earwax.

I want a Hot Rod, but I'll probably get a Soft Top...
This is just a quick post because we have been so busy and have just got in from our trip out today.
I wasn't really paying much attention to Daddy in the car on the way home, I was too busy thinking about what I needed to do tomorrow but I heard him mention The MAD's and something about getting me a treat if I were lucky enough to win.
I am thinking that it might be a new car, because he was talking about me having my pick of an "Escort".
This is the sort of Escort he means right?

Mummy Giggles - Just past the end of my nose!
Not long after I had passed my driving test I took my little Nissan Sunny out at night to drive to see Daddy, who back then was simply Fiancé.
As I drove down the street I lived on, I thought to myself how stupid car designers were. They have missed a trick here I thought. I mean when its dark you can't see the dials in the car...
Yup I forgot to turn my headlights on. I worked it out before I was at the end of my street though!

Daddy Giggles - Where he left it!
We were running a few minutes early for dropping me off for lunch with my Mum and Sister, so decided to take a quick detour to the petrol station.
Daddy got out of the car and filled up the tank. We then drove in Saturday traffic to the restaurant that my Mum had chosen. It was only when I had got out of the car and was talking to my Mum's best friend (who was joining us for Lunch) that Daddy noticed his wallet was missing.
"Pip? Have you seen my wallet?" he asked
"No..." I answered thinking he must of left it at the Petrol station
Daddy got out of the car panicking and remembering that he had put his wallet on the roof of the car.
Yup, we had just driven a third of a mile with his wallet on the roof of the car...

Top Ender Giggles - When she is right, she's right!
Last Sunday the car was covered in salt and sand from our trip to the seaside to see Nanny B, so Top Ender and Daddy went for a quick car wash whilst Baby Boy and I stayed at home.
Top Ender was sitting in the front seat whilst they were in the car wash and was looking out of the passenger window.
"We're moving Daddy" said Top Ender
"No it is just the brushes making it look like we are moving" answered Daddy knowingly
"No we really are moving" said Top Ender
"No Top Ender it is just the brushes, it is making an optical illusion" Daddy said trying to dust the dashboard
"We really are!" exclaimed Top Ender
"Top Ender! Daddy pleaded
"I swear we are moving!" muttered Top Ender
A few minutes later as Daddy started the car to drive out of the car wash he realised that the handbrake wasn't on.
"Oh erm you know what Top Ender? We probably were moving." he admitted
"I knew it!"

Top Ender Giggles - Look at that!
Top Ender was sitting in the front of the car whilst we were driving home. We were all chatting together about various things when Top Ender suddenly shouted out
"Look at that!" and started pointing to the sky, just above the rear view mirror.
Wondering what was happening both Daddy and I bent to look out the window and it was lucky that we were at a junction or Daddy might of crashed the car.
"That is the biggest rain drop I have ever seen!" Top Ender explained "Well apart from that one just above it.."

Top Ender Giggles - Ultimate in bad service
Going past this sign (yes I did make Daddy drive that way the next day so I could take a photo!) Top Ender was practising her reading skills and stated that the new McDonalds in the area wasn't very good.
"Whys that Top Ender?" we asked
"They only serve two meals every 24 hours" explained Top Ender

Baby Boy Giggles - And thats all I have to say about that
On New Years Day we were driving to my Mother In Laws house to drop off a gift (for that story look here at Buying Gifts for difficult people!). Top Ender and Baby Boy were in the back chatting away to each other whilst Daddy and I were talking about the plans for the day.
"Mum-Mum? asked Baby Boy "Mum-Mum? Mum-Mum? Mum-Mum? MUM-MUM!" he repeated
I turned around in my seat to face him the best I could
"Yes Baby Boy?" I answered

"Burp!
The whole car then errupted in laughter, at Baby Boys perfect timing!

Top Ender Giggles - Does it also have TTDE?
Top Ender and Daddy were talking in the car, about the cars we had had in the past and how come the current car is the best out of all of them.
"Well this car has an electronic display and a CD player and get your feet off there Top Ender and air conditioning"said Daddy
"I didn't know it had that! Where is it?" asked Top Ender
"What?" said Daddy
"Get your feet off there... where's that then?"
"Sarcasm doesn't suit you Top Ender!"
